About Us

Our Mission

The Black Engineers Society (BES) is the student chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers at the University of Maryland. Our primary focus is “to recruit, retain, and release qualified minorities into fields of computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physical sciences.”


The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”.

Our History

Founded in 1975 the Black Engineers Society has remained a long time member of the University of Maryland and National Society of Black Engineers. From its inception the Black Engineers Society has sought to develop a dynamic and family community for students of all walks at the University of Maryland College Park.

After over 50 years of continuous activity Black Engineers Society can has earned numerous awards including. NSBE Region 2 Chapter of the Year, NSBE National Chapter of the Year, and University of Maryland Professional Organization of the Year. Black Engineers Society seeks to positively impact the community it serves.

Our Membership

National Conference

National Conferences are usually located in a different state and are longer. These conferences are held for longer days during the spring semester and provide the following:

  • Career Fair
  • Professional development workshops
  • Get to travel to a different state with the chapter!
  • Competitions (with awards for winning teams)
  • Opportunity to see members outside of DMV.
