Who We Are

The Black Engineers Society is an organization geared toward the professional development, academic success, and overall support for minority STEM majors here at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Our Mission

The Black Engineers Society’s chapter mission is “to recruit, retain and release qualified minorities into fields of computer science, engineering, mathematics and physical sciences”

What We Do

Our chapter provides professional development, academic support, and a community to black STEM majors to help one another through their career path. We also provide STEM programs to middle and high school students as well!

General Body Meetings

General Body meetings are the most consistent and most prevalent events that we hold as an organization. General Body meeting accomplish many goals such as promote member engagement, source of information for events, and provide engaging programs that benefit members socially, academically, and professionally. Can’t wait to see you at 5:00 on Wednesday’s!

Freshman Committee

Freshmen Committe is a bi-weekly initiative held on Sundays, dedicated to supporting freshmen and transfer students throughout their STEM journey at the University of Maryland. The program hosts events tailored towards builidng community, fostering personal growth, and preparing students for academic and professional success. Freshmen Committee are held Sundays at 2pm, see you there!

Technical Outreach & Community Help (TORCH)

Technical Outreach & Community Help, otherwise known as TORCH, are events that the Black Engineers Society’s uses to form community outreach. In TORCH sessions BES members work with local 6th grade to 12th grade students to provide exposure to various STEM disciplines. 

Pre-College Initiative (PCI)

Through the Pre-College Initiave Program, BES offers students in grades 9 through 12 the chance to get ready for college and gain firsthand knowledge of what college is like. This includes getting help identifying pathways to success in college and possibilities for college student shadowing.
